A headless robot called the mini Cheetah, developed by US researchers, has been taught to play football.

Machine learning has been used to allow the robot, made at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), to negotiate objects though trial and error.

The robot can go over different types of terrain and in theory it can be pushed or kicked, and still stay upright.

Director of MIT’s computer science and artificial intelligence laboratory, Daniela Russ, said other real-world applications of the technology used include tasking the robot to travel across dangerous territory or even carrying things for humans.

This film is from Click – the BBC’s weekly technology show.
